West Weares Wander

With the sun out and lockdown easing we were able to take a walk from the cottage along the coast path, taking in the sights of Tout Quarry, St George’s Church and West Weares along the way.

We started by heading down Higher Lane, the public footpath that runs alongside next doors cottage and continued towards the Prom where The Cove pub is. From this point it’s all uphill towards Tout Quarry via the coast path and up the steps that run above the beach huts at Chesil Cove.

Tout Quarry has some great sculptures and a map of the locations can be downloaded from the internet. It’s great to have a scramble over the rocks to see what is hidden.

From here we continued to St George’s Church and Cemetery, where it was peaceful just taking our time reading the inscriptions. Some graves have been marked to commemorate those lost in war and it was interesting to read about the bomb damage that occurred. The gravestones themselves are amazing just for some of the carvings and one day we will try and join a guided tour to find out more.

We continued towards Weston and then skirted down the path back towards the coast near the playing field and housing estate. The path runs alongside Blacknor Fort, which was constructed in the early 1900s as a fortification to protect the harbour. It’s been in private ownership since the mid century. At this point we rejoined the coast path back along West Weares back towards the quarry and cottage.

It’s a lot easier coming down the hill and we were lucky in grabbing some lunch at Quiddles. Although all the tables had reserved signs and a big sign also said “fully booked”, as we walked back towards the cottage we noticed one table didn’t have a reserved sign and after enquiring, we were sat overlooking the sea eating calamari and crab sandwiches. We completely lucked out as the table was reserved but we had 45 minutes before having to vacate, which was perfect. The weather was amazing and we could have been anywhere in the world, it was that wonderful.

The one good thing is that at least the slog back up Higher Lane, helps towards working off any lunchtime delights.

Welcome Back

Well what a year 2020 was. We had only started renovating the cottage when Covid struck and firmly believed by 2021, normality would prevail. How wrong we were.

Here we are again and we cant wait to visit Portland very soon. In the meantime we hope everyone is keeping well and look forward to welcoming guests back when it’s safe to do so.
